I start night shift today so I will need a nap later. I hope my body can still handle being up all night. I will find out soon. It will give me a chance to catch up on my reading…. at least I hope so.

Places to see are Murchison Falls National Park. The natural wonder comes from the falls where the Nile narrows from  1000 ft across to 20 ft. Then the water goes through a rock cleft that drops 130 ft  to where crocodiles and hippos are waiting.

Tracking the Mountain Gorillas in Bwindi National Park. This national Park takes a small controlled number of visitors through the park tracking the gorillas. Of course you are not guaranteed to see these illusive animals. The highest mountain range is Ruwenzori’s mountains. Uganda is Africa’s best kept secret.

Ugandan people are friendly and the majority are Christian and there is a small amount of Muslims.

The land is fertile. The climate in uniformly tropical with 26C days and 16C nights. The hottest months are Dec to Feb. The wettest in the south is March to May and again in Oct to Nov.  Rhino’s are being reintroduced. Kampala biggest city where most people live around. Many National Parks.  You need  to be careful in some areas. Close to the Congo and Rwanda and Sudan. English official language and 33 local language. Queen Elizabeth and Murchison falls National Parks.

Medical concerns: Altitude sickness Bilharzias in lakes.
Money: Ugandan Shilling (USh). Small bills have a low exchange rate larger bills have a better rate. Get reputable guides for all tracking and tours. You need a Visa to enter.

Uganda had civil unrest in its past. Idi Amin ruled the country but has been gone since 1979. In the mid 1950’s independence ws started by a school teacher Dr Milton Obote and became achieved in 1962. 1971 Amin came into power and went into exile in 1979 when he went to Libya and died in Saudi Arabia in 2003. Lots of turmoil and coups.

No written history until the 19th century when British settlers came. 1890 British rule carved up Africa. Buganda tribes people were recruited to help the British rule the country.
Uganda comes from Buganda Kingdom.

There are oral traditions were passed on. Buganda until 1892. Kings and turmoil with different kingdoms. British came 1884-1892. Had slave traders. King reign ended due to small pox epidemic that killed heirs to the throne. A youthful nephew offered the kingdom with no resistance in 1898 then the British ruled. The 1st Governor is Sir Harry Johnston. An anti-slavery campaign came in 1890. Independence 1952-1962. Did have prime ministers. Political crisis 1966 Obote got rid of the constitution and made himself a in charge. Stripped Mustesa of his presidency.  He made himself “Life President” and got rid of the prime ministers.  Amin instrumental in Obote grip of power.  2006 the 1st  multi-party elections were held.

In the beginning….. (from Uganda Bradt by Philip Briggs with Andrew Roberts)

In the above mentioned book an interesting story of creation is mentioned.  Ggulu, the creator, sent his daughter Nambi and her siblings on a day trip to earth.  As the story goes Nambi was attracted to a man Kintu and wanted to marry him but her family was upset.  She stays behind on earth to keep Kintu company because his only companion was a “beloved” cow.  This was in present-day Kampala.  She did eventually get the blessing of Ggulu to stay on earth and marry Kintu.  Nambi’s brother, Walumbe, who was the spirit of disease and death came to visit and did not want to leave earth.  This Kiganda creation myth has Old Testament association between human disobedience and the start of death and disease on the earth.  This is an interesting story that has been passed down the generations over time.

I have the distinct privilege of serving on a short-term mission’s team that will go to Africa. Our team of 12 men and women will travel to Uganda, Africa. It is planned for July 18, 2011 to July 30, 2011.  The mission trip will focus on two different ministries. We will start with Hesed International. Their objective is to be a catalyst for spiritual renewal and growth in the church. We were asked by the Bishop of Uganda to teach pastors for the growing number of churches in that country. We are sponsoring a four day conference to train these pastors.

In addition to this conference we will spend time with Amazima. They sponsor over 400 orphaned children. Most of these children were street kids that were placed in the center. These children are provided an education, school supplies, three meals a day and medical care. Our goal is to establish an ongoing relationship with Amazima to provide support for these orphaned children so they can continue to receive housing and the medical care they need.

I am asking you to join me in this mission by helping my raise financial support for our team. We are asked to raise $3500 per person to cover all meals, accommodations, and airfare (our biggest expense). All donations are, of course, tax deductible and you will receive a receipt that you can use for tax purposes. All support raised is considered team support so any funds that I raise over and above what I need will be put into our team fund to cover costs for the entire team. Any check should be made out to Preston Trail Community Church and will be credited to your giving account for tax purposes. In the memo section write Uganda/Karen Keane.
